Winter "Surprised" Facility Managers Again
Heat pumps won't heat. The office is freezing, and the school is canceling classes. Does it really have to be this way?
Thermometers hit -15°C, and panic spread through businesses and municipalities... While facility managers call inactive service numbers, absurd scenes unfold on the rooftops of prestigious investments. Is a heat pump really a "green dream" that turns into a winter nightmare? Is the technology really to blame?
Why Won't Your Heat Pump Heat?
It's not the frost's fault – it's the fault of poor decisions made during the investment phase. When temperatures drop, suddenly the unit that looked great in the price catalog becomes a useless piece of furniture. Why does this happen?
We Poles very often tend to choose the "CCC" parameter when investing – Cheapest Choice Creates miracles. When creating technical specifications for orders, we don't bother to separate low-quality equipment through guidelines and specific parameters imposed on contractors. Often not knowing how to do this, we approach the matter on the principle: cheaper = better.
Polonez or Ferrari?
Heat pumps are like cars. You can drive a Polonez, or you can drive a Ferrari. When the argument comes up: "I can't afford such an expensive pump," we respond: "Can you afford a cheap one?"
The differences in bills for large buildings using heat pump technology for heating can reach several hundred thousand PLN per year.
Comparison of School Heating Costs
In the end, it all comes down to the same thing: a well-prepared technical specification for the tender.
Does Business Handle It Better? Not Necessarily.
Do you think businesses handle this better? We constantly hear from the biggest players that heating doesn't work, buildings are cold, and bills are astronomical.
Energy transformation is a complex process. It requires extensive industry knowledge, hundreds of completed investments, and the selection of solid partners – so you don't complain later when beautiful winter weather arrives.

But What About the Technology?
The Nominal Power Myth
Many manufacturers specify heat pump power for point A7/W35 or A2/W35. This means the heat pump will deliver water at 35 degrees to the system when it's plus 7 outside.
In short: the pump will only heat efficiently when outdoor temperatures are positive. But what happens when it's -10 degrees?
The real test is A-7/W55 or A-15/W35. Reliable manufacturers provide this parameter at precisely -7 or -15 degrees.
The Bivalent Point – The Silent Killer
In cheap units, electric heaters kick in at 0°C. If the system was poorly selected, the pump "gives up" precisely when it's needed most.
It wasn't the frost that failed – it was the decision to buy a "cheaper equivalent" that technically is just an oversized air conditioner.
"I Have a Warranty, So I Sleep Easy"
This is the most common mistake of Facility Managers. In reality, the responsibility structure often looks like this:
General Contractor → Subcontractor → Installer → Wholesaler → Manufacturer
In the middle of winter, when it's 12°C in the building, no one answers the phone.
How Not to Get Frozen on Your Next Investment?
Don't look exclusively at price – this parameter will verify you faster than you think. Before you sign another contract, look deeper:
1. Choose a Solid Partner for Audit and FUP
Hire a professional advisory company that can demonstrate completed projects already at the investment design stage.
2. Technology Instead of "Tractor"
Select intelligent heat pump systems. Instead of one large 130 kW unit, opt for a cascade. Look at the COP parameter and choose manufacturers who guarantee the pump will heat at -7 degrees, not just at +7. Make sure you enter the correct parameters in the specification.
3. Verify and Enforce Service
Choose contractors offering direct manufacturer service. Before you make 15 calls through the general contractor and subcontractors, good manufacturers' service will have already responded. Standard response time is 24h – regardless of whether the installer still exists or has just declared bankruptcy.
